Mutants and Magic
Most of the “Realm” follows the Western side of CA Route 125, from its Northern point to the southern tip at the Mexican border (and a little beyond).
1. Balboa Park. All of the green colored areas here are part of the sprawling city environs. Wharves line most of the “outer”, sea-side parts. Crab-men ghettos surround the docks and under-city areas. The Foreign Quarter is located at the tree mark, the zoo mark is a royal menagerie (still basically a zoo, but with many dangerous animals and private hunting).
Between the two, and inland, lies the built-up “Noble City” proper (many spires reaching several hundred feet) with additional walled-in areas to the West (5th street),and East (Pershing Drive). Inside are the mighty Temples, rich Clan Houses, Bureaucratic Offices, and the Royal Palace. A constantly changing assortment of fine Apartments, Bathhouses, Eateries, Intoxicant Parlors, and other high-scale establishments cater to the tastes of the obscenely wealthy inside the city walls. An escort, city pass, or proof of Nobility is required to make it past the gates.
In all of the green areas surrounding the city sections are industrial areas (some, like textile dying pools, are highly toxic and give off the city‘s trademark yellow mists. Bound Air Elementals work day and night to keep the nobility free of this annoyance. However, the city IS noticeably free of many of the local insect pests that plague other areas…), warehouses (especially for flammable goods, and most are always guarded), and ghettoes/slums.
All the products of the nearby lands travel at one point through the city, and are then shipped off to be sold. Dyaghou is a famous port, some merchants travel 300 miles or more to do business at the “City of Yellow Mists”.
2. North Park/El Cerrito. The rest of the peninsula, (roughly following El Cajon Blvd East to Lemon Grove), is filled with private orchards and exclusive villas. Most take the form of high-walled adobe compounds, and roads that are well patrolled by both city and private guards. The are many small fields and rocky outcroppings that traveling merchants try to hawk their wares from to avoid city taxes, they are often sent off quickly by the locals, and are considered a pest.
3. Lemon Grove. The ground rises to catch cool morning mists and gentle sea breezes, perfect conditions for the many orchards and farms that dominate every piece of land not covered in rock here. There are few walled-in orchards; but most Villas have a wall. Many of the communities trade goods amongst themselves to avoid taxation, and most have at least one tavern available for travelers, although prices are very steep.
4. La Mesa. This area has many fine ranches raising specialty eggs, meats, and other animal products. Locals claim their goods are better than the southern wares because of the “Grace of the God Mount”, and are able to command higher prices. They are close to the Dragons of Kal’Hoon, and often find their stock depleted by attacks. The Eastern Fletcher Woods are home to seasonal bands of vicious Parrot Men.
5. The God Mount, Immortal Home, The Cowled Mountain, Misty Mountain. Thousands of pilgrims make the journey up this, the tallest mountain in the area (Mt. Miguel is taller, but not is cowled in white mists, nor considered the “stairway to heaven“). Hundreds of shrines devoted to nearly ever Immortal Aspect known to mankind dot the trail up the mountain side. Weapons, or violence of any kind, is expressly forbidden here. Most sacrifices are done in the City, but many offerings are left at the shrines (which usually have magical curses and/or guardians to ward against theft). Those who dare to enter the mists at the top disappear forever (treat as a Sphere of Annilation, with no chance of Raising or Resurrection later, for “Tempting the Wrath of the Immortals”)
6. Mount Hellaxe. The beautiful, but deadly rain forested area is home to Snail Men, Fly Heads, and dozens of toxic animals, insects, and plants. Most locals claim that it will never be conquered…
7. The Valley of Kal’Hoon. The Dragons’ lands to the East, where the territory of Dyaghou ends…
8. The Northern Lands. The Death Craters of Mi’Mar. These lands are infested with so many dangerous types of mutants, that the people of Dyaghou rarely visit, and have no settlements. It known to be home to a mysterious group called the Mutant Lords. The area is known to harbor many “poisonous” ruins, full of mutagenic substances and radiations, but also great wealth in the form of ancient artifacts…
9. Spring Valley, La Presa, Bonita Hills, Northern Eastlake. These areas are a mix of coastal fishing villages, farms, orchards, ranches, and virgin wilderness. The people are under constant threat from sea raiders and monsters from the eastern mountains, there are a few Borderland Keeps, but not enough to defend everyone.
10. Eastlake, Otay Lakes. This area is dominated by the reptile and insect infested Eastlake swamp lands. Many dinosaurs, and several bands of cannibal lizardmen dwell here.
11. Rancho San Diego, Jamul. These hills and mountains are home dozens of warring tribes of Dreg mutates, and several bands of Beast-Head giants that none have stood against. Rumors of a hidden, underground, vaulted city of terror have persisted for years…
12. Mexico, South-East Tijuana Hills. These hills are constantly lit by the sacrificial fires of the screaming victims of the Burning Sun people. They worship their aspect of the Volcano God with unholy fervor (believing that only a constant supply of souls can keep the Dying Sun alight), and raid coastal communities for fresh victims. Dyaghou devotes many riches to the war efforts against these people and their demon giant masters…their has been a stalemate in effect for generations.
12. The Dread Isle of Loma. Some foul power holds sway over this little volcano studded island. None have been able to clear it of danger…
